Doing Without Thought

Sulla chiusura della libreria Hoepli a Milano

There are fewer than twenty days left until the Hoepli bookshop in Milan closes its doors. This is not news; it is a symptom.

It's not just a set of doors that are closing here. The space for thought is shrinking. Three floors of books are turning into emptiness and shelves are being stripped bare in full view of everyone. This is not silence, but subtraction.

Milan is not changing; it is becoming simpler. It is cutting away whatever fails to generate enough, fast enough, for someone’s benefit. The places that teach us to linger, to doubt and to lose our way are becoming obstacles.

The giants do not win; they advance. Without memory, without friction, and without any need to ask why. And every time this happens, we lose something that cannot be brought back. Not a shop. A possibility.

Because a bookshop doesn't just sell books; it defends slow time, protects thought, and keeps a crack open in the noise.

Closing one is easy. The consequences are not.

This time, the question is brutal: do we truly notice, or will we only realise what we have lost when there is nothing left to defend?
